Why Power of Attorney matters

A will only protects your family after you die. A Power of Attorney protects you while you're alive — if you're ever incapacitated by illness, injury, or accident, your appointed attorney can manage your finances and make health care decisions on your behalf without a court process.

Without a POA, your family may need to apply to a court for guardianship or a committeeship order — a costly, stressful process that can take months and cost thousands in legal fees, all while you're incapacitated.

The bundle includes two documents:

  • Power of Attorney for Property — manages finances, accounts, real estate
  • Power of Attorney for Personal Care — health decisions, living arrangements

Frequently asked questions

Is MyFareWill legally valid?
MyFareWill generates a Last Will and Testament document formatted following standard will conventions used in common law jurisdictions. However, the document is not legally valid until signed by you in the presence of two adult witnesses (who are not beneficiaries) in accordance with your province or state's laws. We recommend consulting a licensed attorney for complex estates.
Is MyFareWill available in Quebec?
Not at this time. Quebec operates under a distinct civil law system that requires a notarized Protection Mandate — a process fundamentally different from the rest of Canada that cannot be supported through our platform. Quebec residents should consult a licensed Quebec notary for their estate planning needs.
What do I need to get started?
You'll need basic personal information (full legal name, date of birth, address), details about your assets, the names and contact information of your executor and beneficiaries, and if you have minor children, the name of your chosen guardian.
How long does it take?
Most people complete their will in 15–25 minutes. You can save your progress at any time and come back later — your data is securely stored and you can edit your will as many times as you need before finalising.
Can I update my will after I've paid?
Yes. Your account gives you permanent access to your will. You can update it any time and re-download the latest version at no additional charge.
Is my information secure?
Absolutely. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We use Supabase's enterprise-grade infrastructure with row-level security, ensuring only you can access your will data.
Do I need a lawyer?
For straightforward estates, a properly signed MyFareWill document may be suitable. For complex situations — business ownership, large estates, international assets, contested family situations — we recommend working with an estate attorney.
